Nature Preserve

Foundation's 18 Acre Nature Preserve:

History

In July of 2000, the Foundation acquired three parcels of land adjoining The Fairfax property.  These parcels (now called the Nature Preserve) total 17.8 acres and consist of the Lake Parcel (9.5 acres), the Buffer Zone Parcel (4.7 acres) and the Pohick Church Historic District Parcel (3.7 acres).

ARRF-P HOLDINGS LLC, created and owned by the Foundation, owns the Nature Preserve.

The three parcels may not be developed beyond their character as a nature preserve and open space.

Maintenance expenses and liability insurance coverage for the three parcels is shared by the owner and operator of The Fairfax with the Inlet Cove Homeowners Association, Inc (the adjoining residential housing development) on a 50-50 basis.

The Foundation maintains any new items installed by it on the three parcels (e.g., the newly constructed gazebo).

The Nature Preserve is for the use of members of the Foundation, other retired military officers and their spouses, and residents of The Fairfax.

MEMORIAL TREE PROGRAM

Together with the Rotarians at The Fairfax, the Foundation has established a tree planting program in memory of a resident. The family can pick from a variety of trees and choose the location to plant the tree. The Foundation will also assist in purchasing a plaque to memorialize the resident.

Contact Marti Martray, the office administrator for specific information at 703/781-2460 or by email.

The Foundation has completed a substantial program to landscape and improve the 18 acre Nature Preserve – in particular the southern half of the Buffer Zone Parcel (the area south of the Lake Parcel).

The overall program included:

IRRIGATION: A fully automated in-ground irrigation system with some 30 irrigation zones has been installed. The water and electricity for this system come from the Community Center at The Fairfax.

The irrigation zones were engineered to meet the needs of the new plants – trees, shrubs, and ornamental grasses - and the lawn grass areas. The system is fully operational.

GAZEBO: A 14’ octagonal wooden gazebo has been installed.  It has a 20’ gently-sloped access ramp for use by electric carts or wheelchairs.  Most of the funds for the gazebo were provided by the two sons and one daughter of BG (US Army, Ret.) and Mrs. Lester Wheeler in memory of their parents.  The Wheelers were long-time residents of The Fairfax and particularly fond of the Nature Preserve.  The area immediately around the gazebo has been landscaped with cedars, crape myrtles, and shrub roses.

PLANTS: A wide variety of trees, shrubs, and ornamental grasses have been recently planted to include:

-- One Swamp (Sweet Bay) Magnolia.

-- Eight Heritage Birches

-- Twenty-four crape myrtles

-- Twenty-three dogwoods

-- Seven Himalayan Cedars.

-- Fourteen Yoshino Cryptomeria or Japanese Cedars.

-- Fifty azaleas.

-- Fifteen Jelena Witchhazels.

-- Four hollies.

-- Twenty hardy shrub roses.

-- Ten Purple Beautyberry Bushes.

-- Some four hundred ornamental grasses.

The fourteen Yoshino Cryptomeria or Japanese cedars are sited to cover portions of the open areas where the Shawnee housing development is visible from the Nature Preserve. The cedars will grow very large in time.
