The Fairfax
At the
request of the Army Retirement Residence Foundation-Potomac (Foundation), The
Fairfax was developed by the Marriott Corporation to be a senior living
residence for retired military officers and spouses. The Foundation entered
into a Sponsorship Agreement with Marriott Senior Living Services and Marriott
agreed to design, finance, build, own, and operate The Fairfax. The Fairfax
opened in August 1989.

In 2003, Marriott exited the Senior Living industry and
sold The Fairfax to CNL Retirement Properties, Inc., (CNL) with long-term
management leased to Sunrise Senior Living, Inc. (Sunrise) as the operator. A
merger of CNL with Health Care Property Investors, Inc. is currently pending.
Sunrise, is the nation's largest provider of senior living services, including
independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and care for residents
with Alzheimer's or other forms of memory loss. The McLean, Virginia, based
Company, which employs more than 40,000 people, has more than 415 senior living
communities open (50 under construction) in 38 states, Canada, and the United
Kingdom and Germany with a combined resident capacity of more than 51,000.
The Fairfax is located on approximately 40 acres of land
just west of Fort Belvoir, Virginia, on U.S. Route 1 (Richmond Highway). Lord
Fairfax, in England, originally owned the land and appointed his cousin William
Fairfax to manage his holdings. William and later his son George William lived
at Belvoir 1741-1773. The Foundation’s logo was fashioned after Lord Fairfax’s
coat of arms.
The community, offering gracious accommodations, comfort,
and security for its residents, opened in August of 1989. Consisting of 347
apartments in five four-story buildings and 35 attached cottages, it is served
by a community center and an on-site health care center, which offers both
assisted living and skilled nursing care.
By September of 1993, all 382 of its units were occupied or
reserved and a waiting list for residency was established. Under the terms of
the Foundation’s Sponsorship Agreement with Sunrise, admission to the community
presently is limited to members of the Foundation.
