The Fairfax Activities

Special Activities at The Fairfax

This information is provided to recognize the good work being done by many volunteers and to advise residents, particularly new arrivals, of the many worthwhile activities available to them. Residents who wish to participate in any of the programs described below should contact the individuals who manage the activities.

Garden Club

There are 52 garden plots available to residents and a storage shed in which supplies are kept, including fertilizer and limestone for use at a small fee. Roses, tomatoes, other vegetables, perennials and annual flowering plants are popular items grown in these plots. There are usually several extra unassigned plots available on a loan basis after all requests have been filled. We look forward to some new residents joining us at our first spring meeting in March and adding to our roster some longtime residents. Club volunteers tend the 125-bush rose garden by the lake in front of the Madison and the bluebird houses around the lake.

It’s a friendly group and we welcome anyone interested in bridge, and meeting new people. So, get yourself a partner, and come join us.

Early Bird Workout - Don Carter (703-781-1815). A dozen or so residents participate regularly in the Auditorium promptly at 7:30 am, Monday through Friday. Thirty-minute videotaped programs, copied from the TV with the commercials deleted, result in 21-minute workout sessions. Three different personalities lead the exercises in three segments: stretching, aerobics and floor exercises (we have sponge mats for each athlete.) Afterwards many of them congregate in the Country Store when it opens at 8:00 am. for a friendly cup of coffee. Warm-up outfits are appropriate. No special equipment necessary. All are welcome.

The purpose is to assist residents who may be visually or mobility handicapped to be able to vote at their residence, as opposed to traveling to assigned polling stations. This would reduce transportation requirements and the burden on limited polling place staff and equipment. The committee’s activities have been expanded to include: (a) assisting residents in registering to vote; (b) requesting applications for absentee ballots; and, (c) assisting residents in completing their ballots in the actual voting process. The committee may also be considered a liaison link with the Fairfax County Registrar’s office.
